Take a Hike with Fresh Trail Mix

This crisp fall air is ideal for hiking. It isn't too hot and heavy, but it isn't so cold you're getting lost in all those layers. Pack up a bag, grab the kids and head out for a day on the trails.

Make sure you pack some extra dry clothes, water, snacks, and depending how long you're going for lunch. Trail mix is an easy go to for hiking, and it's perfect because you can personalize it even for your picky eaters. Of course they do sell pre-made mixes, and you can always grab a bag of those to bring along.

I'm a bulk section junkie, and trail mix is the perfect excuse to go a little crazy getting just a little bit of everything the bulk section of your local grocer has to offer. As long as your mix includes something sweet, something fruity, and some nuts, your pretty much set. Buying the ingredients separately in the bulk section also allows you to personalize for each member of the family, leaving out what they don't like, and tossing in more of their favorites. For my latest batch I used six ingredients and bought just enough of each for 4 servings of trail mix.

Trail Mix Ingredients

Ingredients:
  • Pistachios (shelled)
  • Dark Chocolate Covered Raisins
  • Dry Roasted Almonds
  • Sesame Sticks
  • Dried Cranberries
  • Seasoned Almonds

  • Mixing it all together is easy! You just need one VacMaster pint sized zipper bag for each member of the family, or one larger bag if you all like to share. Simply add a little of each ingredient to each bag, fold the top over, give it a shake to mix it up. Next use your VacMaster vacuum sealer to seal each bag. If you are making a bunch to save for later be sure to run a full cycle, if you plan to eat them right away I like the seal only function for this.
