Three Easy Tips To Save Money Buying In Bulk

Vacuum packaged, portioned meat

By the last week of January a good chuck of people are already giving up on those New Year's resolutions; if your resolution was to be better with money, spend less on food, or to eat healthier, don't give up yet. I myself made those same resolutions, instead of heading out to eat for my lunch break I have been bringing my lunch or heading home to eat. We've been saving money by buying our food in bulk, portioning it out for vacuum packaging and freezing what we won't use right away.

1. Portion, Package, Freeze

I still make the weekly trip to the grocery store for certain items that my family goes through quickly that we don't freeze, but those trips are quick and easy on the wallet. At the beginning of the month/year we went and stocked up on meal necessities. Many things such as meat we simply portioned, sealed and frozen.

2. Meal Prep

My husband and I also did a little bit of meal prep for our lunches. We've found that if lunch is in the fridge and we can grab and go in the morning, we are less likely to eat out for lunch, saving some extra money. When I meal prep I just make a big batch and bag it up into individual servings to freeze. The night before I just put it in the fridge to defrost. If it is a hot meal in the morning I re-heat it and toss it in a thermos and I'm out the door.

3. Slow Cooker or Sous Vide

One of our favorite things about having everything portioned and ready to use is planning dinner on a busy day. I always like to make sure my kids eat well, and on days when my husband and I both have a full schedule that can become a challenge. On these days in the morning I just toss a meal into my slow cooker or sous vide cooker- and it's ready when we're ready.
